In the Footsteps of the First

A History of the volunteers of the First Light Horse

Description

At the declaration of war in August 1914, the volunteers of the First Light Horse Regiment were eager for adventure and enthusiastic to defend the Empire against the Kaiser’s aggression. When Turkey entered the conflict at the end of October, the First were already in King George’s Sound (West Australia) en route for training in Egypt before deployment in France and Belgium.

To counter Turkey and relieve Russia, a front was opened in the Mediterranean, with the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915. The First were committed to the campaign – without horses – on 5 May.

They remained on The Peninsula with heavy casualties until the very last – 23 December. The story, told in the offical language of the Brigade War Diaries, provides a record of the eight month campaign. It includes details of the casualties as they occur, and also the Nominal Roll of the First which makes it an invaluable resource for family historians and others interested in the campaign.
