‘poems
that beg to be learned and demand to be performed’
‘poetry as a means of enjoyably creating an awareness of the
distinctive traditional Australian culture...rollicking flavour
that is sure to entertain listeners of all ages....’
The books of the Reciter series are designed for Australian
performers, especially young performers.
The late Bill Scott was Australia’s leading collector of folklore.
He was also novelist, story writer and teller and poet. His
poetry in this collection rollicks through the landscape telling
of strange creatures, favourite pets, pioneers, rascals and
loved friends. He wrote with an ear for the natural rhythms
of our speech, an eye for our distinctive images, and a memory
of tall stories he heard and places he visited during
a long career which stretched to the Navy in war and in peace,
the canefields of North Queensland, the opal mines of the
outback and the bookshops of our capital cities and country
towns.
Several of these poems are for two voices,
and many are wonderfully suitable for choral speech.
In 2001 at Tamworth, Bill was given the Judith Hosier Heritage
Award for his lifetime contribution to the preservation of
Australian Bush verse.
SEE WHAT I’VE GOT was short-listed for the
Australian Bush Laureate Awards in 2002
